Who is Ernest Bowers Garrett?

Ernest was born the ninth child to James Albert Garrett and Harriet Goble on 7 March 1890 in Riverside, Millard, Utah.  His twin brother, Phillip, died that same day.  His mother died just a few months later on 20 Jun 1890.  With eight older children to raise, James allowed baby Ernest to be raised by Harriet’s older sister, Caroline Goble Bowers (my gg-grandmother).  Harriet and Caroline must have been close.  As young girls, they survived traveling to Salt Lake with their family in the Hunt Wagon Company (attached to the Martin Handcart Company) during the winter of 1856.  Several years after Harriet’s death, Caroline writes that Harriet appeared to her, which comforted Caroline when two of her children died of diptheria in Oct.1879.  (I don’t see how this can be since the 2 children died in 1879 and Harriet died in 1890; however, this is what is written in Caroline’s biography – written by unknown.)

This is the Bowers family in about 1910.  Seated are Jacob Bowers and Caroline Goble Bowers.  Standing from left to right are: Ernest Garrett, Bertha Leah, Jacob, Ether, James, Ada May, and John Henry.  Ernest was raised as a beloved member of this family.  He seemed especially close to Bertha (my g-grandmother) who was just 2-years older than him.

In the picture at left are Ernest (seated) and Bertha (standing).

In the picture at right are Ada, Ernest, and Bertha (from left to right). *see comments

Ernest entered the army and sent letters to the Bowers family; still in our possession are two letters dated July 1918 and Oct 1918.  In the second letter, he mentions Merle Thornton whom he married the following year on 24 Jun 1919.  They became the parents of twin boys born in Moroni, Sanpete, Utah on 14 Nov 1922.  Ernest Thornton Garrett is shown at right.  The other boy, Phillip, died that same day.

I am beyond speechless to have stumbled across this page! Ernest was my grandfather, and I was searching online today for some info on him as a gift to my mother–Julia Adell—his daughter, as she is becoming quite frail healthwise. I am certain she doesnt have ANY of these pictures or information, so I cannot tell you how grateful I am you listed this. I will search through your other pages to see if theres anything else I might be able to use as well….Thank you again so much!

The picture above of the three children named Ada, Ernest and Bertha are incorrect. They are Thelda, Deloy and Veda Jenkins who are the children of Ada May Bowers and Alvin Whitney Lee Jenkins. Ada and Alvin are my grand parents.
Thanks for the other information posted. I believe my father was named after Ernest by his mother, Ada, who grew up with Ernest Garrett like his sister.
