Alvah Hancock – 1854

Alvah Hancock, my 4th great-grandfather, died and was buried in Iowa before getting the chance to gather with the saints in Salt Lake.  His wife, Julietty Eames, traveled to the Salt Lake valley during 1854 (or before 1856) in an “Unknown” company.

-Alvah was born on 19 Apr 1796 at Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts to Thomas Hancock and Amy Ward.  Here is a biography for Thomas Hancock.  Alvah’s brother was Levi W. Hancock.  Here is Levi’s autobiography, which speaks of Alvah at times.

-Julietty Eames was born on 6 Nov 1806 at Mentor, Lake County, Ohio to Benjamin Eames and Julia Bacon.

-Alvah & Julietty were married abt 1824 in Ohio.

First child, Abigail, was born on 3 Apr 1825 at Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio.

-Second child, Sarah, was born on 3 Nov 1826 at Willoughby, Lake, Ohio.

-Third child, Benjamin, was born on 24 Apr 1830 at Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

-Thomas Hancock and many of his children (including Alvah & Julietty) were baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1830 while living at Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga, Ohio.  They were taught by Parley P. Pratt, Sidney Rigdon, and Oliver Cowdery.  Alvah was ordained into the 30th Quorum of the Seventy.

-Fourth child, Joseph Warren, was born on 12 Oct 1831 at Mayfield, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

-Fifth child, John Turney, was born on 18 Jun 1835 in Clay County, Missouri.

-Sixth child, Aurilla, was born on 2 Apr 1838 in Clay County, Missouri.

-Seventh child, my 3rd great-grandfather Cyrus Mortimer, was born on 6 Jun 1841 at Portland, Van Buren, Iowa.  He later married Martha Ann Bracken, daughter of James Bennett Bracken.  HERE is the page for James Bennett Bracken.

-Eighth child, Martha Angeline, was born on 30 Sep 1846 at Mt. Pisgah, Harrison, Iowa.

-Alvah died on 17 Jul 1847 and was buried at Mt. Pisgah, Harrison, Iowa.  Some time over the next few years, most of the family eventually traveled to Salt Lake.

-Listed in the 1851 Iowa State Census was Julietty with 5 children, living in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.  Then, the family was later found in the 1856 Utah Statehood Census Index living in Provo, Utah, Utah.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census was Julietty with some children/grandchild, living in Payson, Utah, Utah.  She was not found in the 1870 US Fed Census.

-Listed in the 1880 US Fed Census was Julietty, living near family in Burrville, Sevier, Utah.

-Julietty died on 28 Aug 1888 and was buried at Burrville, Sevier, Utah.

-Alvah & Julietty were sealed by proxy on 28 Feb 1911 in the Salt Lake Temple, according to church ordinance records.
