Edward Bowles – 1856

Edward Bowles and Ann Bolton, my 3rd great-grandparents, traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in the James G. Willie Company, which arrived in Salt Lake on 9 Nov 1856.

-Edward was born on 23 Sep 1806 at Chippenham, Wiltshire, England to Isaac Bowles and Mary Hatter.

-Ann was born on 23 Jan 1802 at Good Acre, Wiltshire, England to Thomas Bolton and Martha Clark.

-Edward first married Amelia Bird on 16 Apr 1831 at Calne, Wiltshire, England.  Their child, Matilda, was born in March 1835; then Amelia & baby died soon after.

-Edward & Ann were married on 8 Oct 1835 at Calne, Wiltshire, England.

First child, my 2nd great-grandfather Thomas, was born on 18 Aug 1836 at Calne, Wiltshire, England.  Here is a biography for Thomas.  He later married Susannah Washburn, daughter of Abraham Washburn.  HERE is the page for Abraham Washburn.

-Second child, Martha, was born on 8 Mar 1839 at Calne, Wiltshire, England.  She died there in October 1848.

-Third child, Mary, was born on 8 Aug 1841 at Chalford, Gloucestershire, England.  She died there in April 1844.

-Edward & Ann were both baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Feb 1843 at Chalford, Gloucestershire, England.

-Fourth child, Enoch, was born on 25 Nov 1843 at Chalford, Gloucestershire, England.

-Fifth child, Hannah, was born in April 1846 at Chalford, Gloucestershire, England.  She died there in January 1850.

-Listed in the 1851 England Census were Edward & Ann with two sons living in Chalford, Gloucestershire, England.

-Edward & Ann as well as their two sons, Thomas & Enoch, emigrated to America on the ship, THORNTON, arriving in New York on 14 Jun 1856.  One month later they had made their way to Iowa City, Iowa where they made preparations to cross the mountains.

-Edward’s family then traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in the company previously mentioned.  They encountered many hardships due to the lateness of the season.  HERE is an excellent chronology of the Willie company beginning with their departure from Liverpool and ending with their arrival in Salt Lake.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census were Edward & Ann with Enoch living in Nephi, Juab, Utah.  Their older son, Thomas, was not found in that census.

-Edward & Ann received their endowments and were sealed in the Endowment House on 8 Dec 1865.  Both their sons did the same with their own wives on that same date!

-Listed in the 1870 US Fed Census were Edward & Ann living in Nephi, Juab, Utah.

-Listed in the 1880 US Fed Census were Edward & Ann living in Nephi, Juab, Utah.  Both sons’ families had continued to live there as well.

-Ann died on 20 Mar 1882 and was buried in Nephi, Juab, Utah.

-Edward died on 25 Jul 1895 and was buried in Nephi, Juab, Utah.
