Hiram Judd – 1847

Judd, HiramFuller, Lisania

Hiram Judd, my 3rd great-grandfather, joined the Mormon Battalion and marched to San Diego, California.  He was a private in Company E.  He arrived in the Salt Lake valley during October 1847.  Afterwards, he returned to Council Bluffs, Iowa to retrieve his wife and young children.

-Hiram was born on 30 Aug 1824 at Bastard Leeds, Ontario, Canada.  His parents were Arza Judd, Jr. and Lucinda Adams.

-Lisania Fuller was born on Jan 1827 at Cambria, Niagara, New York.  Her parents were Lucius Hubbard Fuller and Experience Case.

-Hiram was originally baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 1 Nov 1833 by James Blakesley in Ontario, Canada.

-Members of the Judd family joined the saints in Illinois; their father Arza Judd, Jr. died there in March 1840; their grandparents Judd both died there in 1842.  The oldest sister, Mary, had married John E. Page there in 1838 and affiliated herself with anti-mormon influence, but most siblings eventually followed Brigham Young to Salt Lake.

-Hiram was ordained to the 32nd Seventy Quorum on 15 Jan 1841.

-Hiram and Lisania were  married on 27 Jun 1844 in Clark County, Missouri… the same day that Joseph and Hyrum Smith were martyred in Carthage, Illinois.

-Both of Lisania’s parents died at Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois during 1845-46.

-First child, Clare Adelia, was born on 25 Jan 1846 at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.  She reportedly died on 25 Mar 1846 at Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, Iowa.

-Second child, Hiram Jerome, was born on 7 Feb 1847 at Council Bluffs.  The following August, Hiram left with the Mormon Battalion, returning to Iowa in 1848.  His brother, Zadok Knapp Judd, was also a member of the battalion.

-Third child, Jane Lucinda, was born on 2 May 1849 at Council Bluffs… approximately 4 weeks later, the family left for the Salt Lake valley in the Samuel Gully/Orson Spencer company, which arrived during September 1849.

-Listed in the 1850 US Fed Census were Hiram & Lisania with four children living in Davis County, Utah.  However, Clara (who had reportedly died) was listed in this census as well as “Lucius” (possibly Arza S?) who was born early the following year appear to be listed in this census.  The ages listed for the children suggest that the census was taken late in the year or early the following year?

-Fourth child, Arza S, was born on 2 Jan 1851 at Farmington, Davis, Utah.

-Hiram & Lisania were sealed on 7 Jul 1851 in the Endowment House.

-Fifth child, Don Carlos, was born on 27 Jul 1852 at Farmington.

-Sixth child, Ira M, was born on 13 Jun 1855 at Farmington.

-Seventh child, Ammon Frank, was born on 13 Apr 1856 at Farmington.

-Eighth child, Lucius Hubbard, was born on 8 Feb 1859 at Santa Clara, Washington, Utah.

-Ninth child, my 2nd great-grandmother Eliza or Lisania, was born on 21 Jan 1860 in Santa Clara.  She later married Joseph Hiram Craig, son of James Craig.  HERE is the page for James Craig.

-Listed in 1860 US Fed Census were Hiram & Lisania with 8 children as living in Farmington, Utah although more recent children were reportedly born in Santa Clara, Utah.

-Tenth child, Diana, was born on 13 Feb 1862 at Santa Clara.

-Eleventh child, Anna, was born on 10 Mar 1863 at Santa Clara.  (She died a few months later in October at Eagleville, Iron, Utah.)

-Twelfth child, Daniel, was born on 13 Jan 1865 at Eagleville, which later became part of Nevada with the state boundary realignment of 1866.

-Thirteenth child, Lyman Perry, was born on 20 Sep 1868 at Eagle Valley, Lincoln, Nevada.

-Listed in 1870 US Fed Census were Hiram & Lisania with several children as well as a housekeeper listed separately with a few more of their children.  They were all living in Eagleville, Iron, Utah according to the census.

-Fourteenth child, Lafayette, was born on 22 Feb 1871 at Eagle Valley, Lincoln, Nevada.

-Hiram married a second wife, Mary Bowman, on 30 May 1879.  She shows up with him in the 1880 US Fed Census with two of his sons (Daniel & Lyman Perry).  In fact, they were found in the census twice that year.  (Mary was born on 30 Jul 1862 in Switzerland.)

-Hiram died on 7 Oct 1894 at Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico.

-Lisania and the youngest son, Lafayette, could not be found in the 1880 or 1900 censuses… but she was listed in the 1910 US Fed Census living with Lafayette’s family in Arizona.

-Lisania died on 17 Oct 1917 at Burley, Cassia, Idaho.

So glad I found your blog! Hiram Judd is also my husband’s 3rd great grandfather! His line is through Hiram Jerome Judd. I’ve written a few posts on the Judd ancestry and one on the probate files of Lisania Fuller Judd’s parents. My blog is over at kindredpast.com. Thanks for a great post!
