James B Bracken

James Bennett Bracken, my 4th great-grandfather, traveled to the Salt Lake valley with his wife, Sarah and children in the Thomas C. D. Howell company, arriving on 18 Sep 1852.  They buried a few family members along the way.

-James was born on 14 Jan 1816 at Colerain, Hamilton, Ohio to Levi Bracken and Elizabeth Clark.  Here is Levi’s biography.

-James and both of his parents were baptized members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 10 Mar 1832.  A couple of his siblings were also baptized a few years later.  Soon after, several members of the Bracken family moved to Missouri and then Nauvoo.

-Sarah was born on 27 Feb 1817 at Boone County, Missouri to Anthony Head and Catherine Maggard.  Sarah’s parents were taught by missionaries as well and accepted the Gospel.  Sarah was baptized during 1835 by Lyman Wight, according to a biography.  Later, the Head family moved to Nauvoo.

-James married Elizabeth Ann Fawcett in September 1837 at Caldwell County, Missouri.  She died on 12 Feb 1842.  This information was found in a biography for James.

-James married Sarah Head on 21 Apr 1843 at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.  Sarah’s father, Anthony Head, died a few months later on 25 Sep 1843 and was buried at Nauvoo.

MarthaAnnBrackenFirst child, my 3rd great-grandmother (at left) Martha Ann, was born on10 Feb 1844 at Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois.  She later married Cyrus Mortimer Hancock, son of Alvah Hancock.  HERE is the page for Alvah Hancock.

-James was ordained to the 24th Quorum of the Seventy on 10 Apr 1845.  Second child, James Bennett, was born a few months later on 4 Sep 1845 at Highland, Madison, Illinois.

-James & Sarah received their endowments in the Nauvoo Temple on 20 Jan 1846.  James’s parents received their endowments two days later and Sarah’s mother the following month.

-Sarah’s mother, Catherine, died at Mt. Pisgah, Iowa in 1847.  She had remarried to Elisha Whiting.  She is listed on the Mt. Pisgah monument as “widow Head Whiting.”

-Third child, William Albert, was born on 2 Mar 1848 at Grand River, Harrison, Missouri.

-Fourth child, Levi Clarence, was born on 2 Jun 1850 at Pottawattamie County, Iowa.  Fifth child, Norvile Extine, was born on 8 Feb 1852 at Pottawattamie County, Iowa.  Both of these children died in Iowa before the family left for the Salt Lake valley during June 1852 in the company previously mentioned.

-James’ father and mother (Levi & Elizabeth Bracken) left about a week later in the Uriah Curtis company.  Levi died of cholera on 12 Jul 1852 and was buried near the Platte River in Nebaska.  He had given a blessing to a woman with cholera the day before.  Elizabeth continued on to Salt Lake.

-Sixth child, Orlando Henry, was born on 9 Mar 1854 at Payson, Utah County, Utah.

-Seventh child, Marcellus Edward, was born on 8 Jun 1857 at Payson, Utah, Utah.

-Eighth child, Sarah Alzada, was born on 18 Apr 1860 at Payson, Utah, Utah.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census were James & Sarah with six children, living in Payson.

-Listed in the 1870 US Fed Census were James & Sarah with four children, living in Pine Valley, Washington County, Utah.

-James’ mother, Elizabeth Clark Bracken, died on 14 Jun 1876 and was buried at Spring Valley, Lincoln County, Nevada.  She had been living with children in Eagleville, Iron, Utah which later became part of Nevada.

-Listed in the 1880 US Fed Census were James & Sarah with three children, living in Pine Valley, Washington, Utah.

-James died on 30 Mar 1900 while visiting a daughter in Panguitch, Garfield County, Utah.  However, he was buried in Pine Valley.

-Listed in the 1900 US Fed Census was Sarah and her youngest daughter, living in Pine Valley.

-Sarah died on 4 Jul 1901 and was buried at Pine Valley, Washington, Utah.
