Crandall, Fred Lewis

Fred Lewis Crandall is Dean’s paternal grandfather.  He was born 12 Sep 1901 in Springville, Utah, Utah.  His father died suddenly just as the family was moving to California in 1903.  Fred was almost 2-yrs-old at the time.  His father was buried in California and his mother immediately returned to Utah where a younger sister was born about one month later.  This mother, Agnes Lewis Crandall, raised and provided for her little family on her own by becoming a school teacher.Pic-Agnes Lewis Crandall & Children1

Fred Sr. with Alma

Fred attended Brigham Young Academy and served a mission to Germany.  He married Margaret Alma McElrath on 19 Aug 1927 in Salt Lake City.  They lived in Colorado where two sons were born, but then moved to California where they spent the rest of their lives together.  He was an accountant for many years.  Fred moved back to Utah when Alma’s health declined.  After her death, he lived next to his younger sister in Provo.  I first met him there when I began dating Dean.  Fred died on 17 Mar 1989 in Santa Maria, California.  Dean’s parents had been taking care of him in their home.  He was buried next to his beloved Alma in the Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah.
