Kang, Helen Lehua Quime

Pic-Helen-Color12Dean’s maternal grandmother, Helen Lehua Quime Kang, was born on 6 May 1918 in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii.  She was the oldest of 5 sisters.  Her father emigrated from Korea and her mother came from the Saffery family in Maui.  Her first marriage (to Esteban Arce) produced Dean’s mother and her second marriage produced three more girls.  Later in life, she married Barney Miller and settled in Louisiana where she is now buried.  She died on 25 April 2005 in Florien, Sabine, Louisiana.

Gma Helen

Grandma Helen blessed our lives by giving us two quilts that she made by hand… completely by hand!  And, she sometimes sent surprises to our family (such as a bag of walnuts or a Christmas decoration) that let us know that she often thought of her grandchildren even if she couldn’t visit.  She once called and asked me the measurements of my kitchen table.  We later received a beautifully crocheted, white table cloth.  It was interesting to us that the cloth did NOT fit our kitchen table.  Instead, it beautifully fit the table we used for the sacrament at our church!
