McElrath, Margaret Alma

F & G in EuropeMargaret Alma McElrath is Dean’s paternal grandmother.  She was born 6 March 1902 in Mendenhall, Simpson, Mississippi.  She went by “Alma” because Margaret was her mother’s name, and also the name of an older sister that died as an infant.  Her family moved from Mississippi to Texas to Arizona and participated in church activities wherever they went.  Her father convinced her to go to Brigham Young Academy where she was very involved in drama and was voted “Most Popular Girl” her junior year… I found this page for her in the 1922-23 Banyan.

Alma met Fred Lewis Crandall during her time at BY Academy.  After teaching school in California, and after he returned from his mission, they were married.  I never met her.  She died on 14 June 1984 in Provo and was buried in Springville, Utah.  What I know about her comes from a eulogy that Dean gave at her funeral.
