B B Messinger – 1853

Barnum Blake Messinger, my 3rd great-grandfather, was an ancestor that traveled to the Salt Lake valley in an “unknown” company.  He traveled with his wife, Louisa and children.

-Barnum was born on 13 Dec 1811 at Stoddard, Cheshire, New Hampshire to Samuel Messinger and Levina Blake.

-Louisa Brooks Howard was born on 5 Oct 1819 at Stoddard, Cheshire, New Hampshire to William Worcester Howard and Candace Brooks.

-Barnum & Louisa were married on 24 Oct 1837 at Westminster, Windham, Vermont.

First child, Sumner Moroni, was born on 5 Aug 1838 at Stoddard, Cheshire, New Hampshire.

-Second child, Murray Winchester, was born on 26 Oct 1839 at Stoddard Cheshire, New Hampshire.

-Third child, Candace Louisa, was born on 23 Aug 1841 at Stoddard, Cheshire, New Hampshire.  She died in 1845.

-Barnum & Louisa were baptized on 23 May 1844 at New Hampshire, according to ordinance records.  The following year, 4-yr-old Candace died.

-Fourth child, Brigham Barnum, was born on 21 Jan 1849 at Westminster, Windham, Vermont.

-Listed in the 1850 US Fed Census were Barnum & Louisa with three children, living in Pottawattamie County, Iowa.

-It is estimated that the family traveled to Salt Lake during 1853 because of the sealing that took place as mentioned below.  Unfortunately, 3-yr-old Brigham was not listed as a traveler to Salt Lake and reportedly died on 9 Sep 1852.

-Barnum & Louisa were sealed on 4 Dec 1853; they were endowed on 28 Feb 1854 at the Endowment House.

-Fifth child, Huldah Mariah, was born on 24 Jun 1854 at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah.

-Barnum married second wife, Sarah Jane Worsley, on 25 Nov 1855 at the President’s Office in Salt Lake.  She was born 23 Oct 1839 in England.

-Sixth child, my 2nd great-grandmother Alzina Eliza, was born on 23 Mar 1857 at Springville, Utah, Utah.  Later, she married Alphonzo Miles Skinner, the son of Horace Austin Skinner.  HERE is the page for Horace Austin Skinner.

-Seventh child, Melvin Howard, was born on 25 Mar 1859 at Springville, Utah, Utah.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census was Barnum with two wives and several children, living in Springville, Utah, Utah.

-Eighth child, Harriet Lovina, was born on 24 Jan 1863 at Fairfield, Juab, Utah.

-Barnum’s second wife, Sarah, re-married another man in 1869 and lived in Springville with him and her children from Barnum.

-Listed in the 1870 US Fed Census were Barnum & Louisa and their children, living in Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Barnum died on 28 May 1878 and was buried at Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Louisa continued to live in Beaver as noted in the 1880 and 1900 US Fed Censuses; she died on 19 May 1908 and was buried in Beaver.

    Barnum ended up with 5 wifes all who are buried next to him in Springville.
