Easton Kelsey – 1851

Easton Kelsey, my 2nd great-grandfather, was captain of the Easton Kelsey company that arrived in the Salt Lake valley on 7 Oct 1851.  He traveled with his first wife and three young children.  After traveling a short time, the company was turned back due to Indian trouble.  They did interact with many Indians along the way.  Additionally, there was some conflict between the two halves of his company as mentioned in one man’s journal.

-Easton Kelsey was born on 9 Mar 1813 at New Lisbon, Otsego, New York to Stephen Kelsey and Charlotte Nichols.  Both parents are buried at Woodstock Cemetery, Champaign County, Ohio.

-Easton was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 11 Mar 1836 in Kirtland, Ohio.

-Easton married Abigail Finch on 14 Sep 1839 at Toledo, Lucas, Ohio.  (Abigail was born on 15 Nov 1823 at Cornwallis, Nova Scotia, Canada to George Finch and Elizabeth Pierce.)

-Easton was ordained to the 6th Quorum of the Seventy on 9 Apr 1845.  Easton & Abigail lived in Nauvoo, Illinois where Easton helped to build the Nauvoo Temple.  They were both endowed and sealed there in Dec/Jan 1846.

-Listed in the 1850 US Fed Census were Easton & Abigail and two children, one other child (Easton) was listed lower on the page with a different family(?).  They were living in Savannah, Andrew, Missouri.

-After traveling to the Salt Lake valley in 1851, Easton & Abigail settled in Fort Union.

-Easton married Jenett Mulliner on 4 Aug 1852 in the Endowment House.  The following year, he married my 2nd great-grandmother Mary Jane Cox on 20 Jul 1853 in the Endowment House.  She is shown below.

Mary Jane Cox-Mary Jane was born on 19 Sep 1833 at Greencastle, Putnam, Indiana to Jehu Cox and Sarah Riddle Pyle.  HERE is Jehu Cox’s page.

First child of Easton & Mary Jane, was Mary born on 8 May 1854 at Union, Salt Lake, Utah.

-Second child, my great-grandfather Calvin, was born on 16 Oct 1856 at Union, Salt Lake, Utah.  He married Annie Elisabeth Elder.  She was the daughter of Claybourne Montgomery Elder.

-Third child, Jehu/John was born on 20 Mar 1858 at Union, Salt Lake, Utah.  He died about three years later.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census was Easton with two wives (Jenett & Mary Jane) and their children living in Lake City, Utah, Utah.  First wife, Abigail, and her children could not be found in this census.

-Fourth child, Sarah was born on 24 Dec 1860 at Lehi, Utah, Utah.  Easton was called to help settle “Dixie” or Washington County, Utah.

-Fifth child, Almira was born on 17 Nov 1864 at St. George, Washington, Utah.

-Sixth child, Rosanna was born on 13 Dec 1867 at St. George, Washington, Utah.

-Seventh child, David Easton was born on 18 Apr 1870 at St. George.  He died within the year.

-Listed in the 1870 US Fed Census were Easton & Abigail (first wife) with their children living in New Harmony, Utah.  He was also listed again with his other two wifes, Jenett (not Lovett) and Mary, and all of their children living together in St. George, Utah.

-Eighth child, Erastus was born on 13 Dec 1872 at St. George, Washington, Utah.

-Ninth child, Rosilla Lucretia was born on 7 Sep 1875 at St. George.  She died within the year.

-Listed in the 1880 US Fed Census were Easton & Mary Jane (third wife) with their children living in St. George, Utah.  Listed separately were his remaining children with Abigail (first wife) in New Harmony and with Jenett (second wife) in St. George.

-Easton’s first wife, Abigail Finch, died on 4 Dec 1892 and was buried at New Harmony, Washington, Utah.  The following year, Easton wrote a brief history of his life.

-Easton died on 10 May 1899 and was buried at St. George, Washington, Utah.

-Listed in the 1900 US Fed Census was Easton’s second wife, Jenett, living with a married daughter in Escalante, Garfield County, Utah.  Listed separately was Easton’s third wife, Mary Jane, living with two of her children in St. George, Utah.

-Easton’s second wife, Jenett Mulliner, died on 13 Apr 1904 and was buried at New Harmony.

-Listed in the 1910 US Fed Census was Mary and one unmarried son living with a married daughter’s family in St. George.

-Easton’s third wife, Mary Jane Cox, died on 18 May 1911 and was buried in St. George.
