Horace A Skinner – 1858

Horace Austin Skinner and Laura Ann Farnsworth, my 3rd great-grandparents, sailed from New York to San Francisco during 1846, and then later traveled from California to the Salt Lake Valley in an “unknown” company during 1858.

-Horace was born on 8 Oct 1815 at Strafford, Orange, Vermont to Austin Skinner and Charity Stevens.

-Laura was born on 7 Oct 1818 at Shirley, Middlesex, Massachusetts to Levi Farnsworth, Jr. and Hannah Harriet Burrage.

-Horace & Laura were married on 20 Oct 1836, likely in New Hampshire.

First child, James Horace, was born on 15 Apr 1842 at Walpole, Cheshire, New Hampshire.

-Horace & Laura were both baptized members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during January 1844.

-Second child, Laura Ann, was born and died during January 1846 at New York, New York.

-Horace & Laura with one son sailed on the ship BROOKLYN from Brooklyn Harbor, New York on 4 Feb 1846.  The voyage took nearly 6 months during which they sailed around Cape Horn and to the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) before arriving at Yerba Buena (San Francisco) on 31 Jul 1846.  This skinner family stayed in California for several years; they prospered by managing a hotel in San Francisco which allowed them to build a nice home where Laura’s brother joined the family.  Eventually, they were able to purchase a farm in San Jose Valley which they sold in order to buy a farm in San Bernardino.  Here is a biography of Horace A Skinner by his son.

-Third child, Joseph Franklin, was born on 8 Jul 1848 at San Francisco, California.

-Fourth child, John Austin, was born on 20 Feb 1852 at San Jose, Santa Clara, California.

-Fifth child, my 2nd great-grandfather Alfonzo Miles, was born on 11 Jul 1854 at San Bernardino, San Bernardino, California.  He later married Alzina Eliza Messinger, daughter of Barnum Blake Messinger.  HERE is the page for B B Messinger.

-Sixth child, Albert Jean, was born on 28 Apr 1856 at San Bernardino, California.

-Horace & Laura left California and traveled to Utah, as mentioned previously, during the winter of 1858 and were sent to help settle Beaver, Utah.  Horace served as Mayor of Beaver for a time.

-Seventh child, Mary Francis, was born on 29 Jun 1860 at Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Horace & Laura were endowed and sealed in the Endowment House on 26 Jul 1862.

-Listed in the 1860 US Fed Census were Horace & Laura with 6 children living in Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Listed in the 1870 US Fed Census were Horace & Laura with 4 children living in Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Horace died on 13 Jan 1880 and was buried at Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Listed in the 1880 US Fed Census was Laura living with her younger daughter and son-in-law in Beaver, Beaver, Utah.

-Laura died on 2 Sep 1895 and was buried at Beaver, Beaver, Utah.
